Day 3 Summary

Murali Vijay anchored India's second innings with a painstaking fifty after England threatened to take charge of the second Test at Lord's on Saturday. India lost three wickets for five runs in 19 balls to be 123 for four -- just 99 runs in front.

But by the close of the third day they were 169 for four -- 145 runs ahead but not yet a decisive lead. Opening batsman Vijay, in for nearly five hours, was 59 not-out and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was unbeaten on 12.

England's Liam Plunkett had a day to remember, scoring a Test-best 55 not out to help his side into a first-innings lead and then taking two wickets in two balls.

What's in store for Day 4:

England will be keen to restrict India to as low a total as possible in the second innings and make it easier for themselves while chasing. Meanwhile, India will be looking to extend their lead past 300, but in order to do that, Vijay and Dhoni will have to spend as much time as possible at the crease. It will be a crucial day for both teams and the forecast is for no rain.

Quotes:

I thought we bowled better and my lengths were better. I do work hard on my batting and it was massive for us to pass their (India's first innings) total... I think we can chase around 270: Liam Plunkett.

It is evenly balanced and we still need some more runs. Setting England a target of 300 would be good on this wicket because the bounce is variable and you are never comfortable batting out there: Cheteshwar Pujara.

India's lead crossed the 150-mark in the opening over of the day off Stuart Broad, which yielded 12 runs. The stand between Vijay and Dhoni also crossed the 50-run mark in the first over. Vijay's first runs came off the first delivery of the opening over, when he got a thick outside edge to the third-man boundary. The opening batsman got a few runs in this area today as he helped India forward.

MS Dhoni, who took a while to get off the mark, got his first runs of the day in the 69th over when he gloved James Anderson to the fine leg area for a couple of runs. Vijay, who was watchful on the third day, looked a lot more confident on the penultimate day, finding the boundaries regularly. His fours included a superb on drive off Plunkett in the 70th over and a commanding cover drive off Ben Stokes in the 73rd over, which helped the opener take his score to 80.

The 5th wicket pair ensured that England did not get any early breakthroughs, seeing through the first 30 minutes without any damage and taking the score closer to the 200 mark.

Dhoni, who is always a good runner between wickets, took a quick couple off Stokes in the 75th over, which helped India past the 200-mark. However, the Indian skipper had to make his way back the very next over, getting a thick outside edge while trying to poke at a Plunkett delivery without moving his feet.

With the second ball due in only a short while, Stuart Binny should have been more circumspect. However, he had a momentary brain freeze when he tried to hit Moeen Ali over the top in the 77th over. The batsman charged down the track and despite not getting to the pitch of the ball, he went ahead with his shot, but all he could manage to do was to hit it high up in the air. Skipper Cook, who ran back from mid off, held on to a superb catch to send back the the number 7 batsman on nought.

Jadeja too attempted to come down the track to Moeen in the 79th over and luckily for him, the ball landed well past the fielder. Vijay, who was too early into his shot, almost handed a catch back to Plunkett in the 80th over before Jadeja drove one through covers for a boundary to take India's lead past 200. England, meanwhile, decided to take the new ball as soon as it was available.

While the England pacers came constantly at the Indian pair with the second new ball, Vijay and Jadeja were up to the task. Although they did play and miss a few times, they gathered the runs at a fair pace. However, India suffered a big setback when Vijay, trying to poke at a short of a length delivery from Anderson in the 83rd over, nicked it to the keeper to depart 5 short of a well-deserved ton. Vijay became the second Indian to be dismissed in the 90s at Lord's. Rahul Dravid is the other, who fell for the same score in 1996.

Stuart Broad, who was in search of his second wicket, was a disappointed man in the 86th over as Joe Root let go of a catch to give Bhuvneshwar Kumar an extended stay. The Indian tail-ender guided one straight to Root at fourth slip, who did not react on time and let the ball go while trying to catch it with his fingers pointed upwards. Meanwhile, Jadeja was keeping the scorecard ticking with timely boundaries and one such shot straight back over Broad in the same over helped India past 250 before the left-hander pulled another delivery with disdain for the same result. Bhuvneshwar too managed a couple of boundaries before India went into lunch at 267/7, leading by 243.
